Passion and Love
by Paul Laurence Dunbar
[from Lyrics of Lowly Life, 1896]

A maiden wept and, as a comforter,
Came one who cried, "I love thee," and he seized
Her in his arms and kissed her with hot breath,
That dried the tears upon her flaming cheeks.
While evermore his boldly blazing eyes
Burned into hers; but she uncomforted
Shrank from his arms and only wept the more.

Then one came and gazed mutely in her face
With wide and wistful eyes; but still aloof
He held himself; as with a reverent fear,
As one who knows some sacred presence nigh.
And as she wept he mingled tear with tear,
That cheered her soul like dew a dusty flower,—
Until she smiled, approached, and touched his hand!

Books are a dying breed. Get out in front. Create radical work that puts itself in the faces of the traditional gatekeepers. Confront their perpetual indifference. Drive your narratives where you want them to go. Refuse to believe that "your work does not fit our list." Make books that are on the cutting edge. Be relevant. The gatekeeper process is oppressive. Stop being nice to them. Editors and agents won't even look at work that contains video. But it's the future. Publishing is arrogant and stupid. It is a good old boys club and you know it. Grab a camera. Make them take note. Refuse to allow the gatekeepers to shut you up or shut you down. Join my Facebook VOOKS group. Get heard. Tear the status quo into shreds and burn it to the ground. Make Guerrilla Art. Do not disappear into that good night. I am Tim Barrus. http://vook.tumblr.com
