Oh! snatch'd away in beauty's bloom
by George Gordon, Lord Byron
[from Hebrew Melodies, published in April 1815]

     I
Oh! snatch'd away in beauty's bloom!
On thee shall press no ponderous tomb;
     But on thy turf shall roses rear
     Their leaves, the earliest of the year—
And the wild cypress wave in tender gloom—

     II
And oft by yon blue gushing stream
     Shall Sorrow lean her drooping head,
And feed deep thought with many a dream,
     And lingering pause, and lightly tread,—
     Fond wretch! as if her step disturb'd the dead!

     III
Away! we know that tears are vain,
     That death nor heeds nor hears distress—
Will this unteach us to complain?
     Or make one mourner weep the less?
And thou—who tell'st me to forget,
Thy looks are wan—thine eyes are wet.

    Whenever I read Byron I think of being in Greece and finding his name scratched on a temple near the sea south of Athens.

    "The mountains look on Marathon--
    And Marathon looks at the sea;
    And musing there an hour alone,
    I dreamed that Greece might still be free;
    For standing on the Persians' grave,
    I could not deem myself a slave."

    I guess it is a bit hard for me to relate to grief being expressed this way. Not that I don't feel grief when some one passes because I do very keenly... but is a more internal, quiet.
    This brings back memories of my cousins death when I was 10... he was my closest companion at that age. Closer than a brother... his death was very hard to grasp at that age... it was so crushing I remember not being able to grieve at all... I was numb with it.
    And My aunts grief was so visible and shattering... I didn't know how to respond... I guess that's why this is hasrd to respond to.

      I find it hard to respond to (in words) as well.  Somehow it seemed fitting for Easter - at least from a person who's certain the historical Jesus remained dead after three days.
