Death by Peanut Butter (by Kevin Eberhardt)

Little Bo Eberhardt, aka Kevin

Little Bo Eberhardt?

What kind of shit is that
The coroner can’t even
Pry my lips apart the
Leguminous paste gluing
My tongue to the roof of
My mouth my teeth
Compressed mid-chew my
Hands coated in this
Thick substance fingered
Fresh from the jar can’t
Say I wasn’t warned but
Who really listens any
More ain’t nothin’ better
In the morning than stale
Bread aggressively toasted
Smothered in waves of
Thick peanut butter chased
Down with lukewarm coffee
Well maybe sex & that
Wouldn’t be a bad way to
Go either lips glued together
In much the same fashion
Different paste of course
Can’t imagine puttin’ that
On toast but anything’s
Possible I guess

Interesting responses... you've gotten two like that so far.

Obviously the poem has impact. because it's elicited a "gut" response from people. :-)

For me it made me think of the peanut butter scare in the press currently.. with the salmonella outbreak. Or people with peanut allergies... who actually can die from even smelling peanut butter. Those were the first things that came to mind for me.

But also something you said once John, about why in prison you came to not like foods with mayonnaise in them... because it elicited certain associations for you. I can see why people, if they put certain things together in their minds, that it is a turn off.

I actually like this poem once I've had time to "digest it".... re-read it. LOL.. sorry I could not resist the pun it just popped up and was there, so I had to use it.

But it reminded me of that stream of consciousness sort of thing we all do at different times in our own mind when we are sitting there daydreaming where we are thinking about one thing and other semi- related ideas pop up. Sometimes weird or funny things wholly unrelated even.

Anyway.. I wish he would come out of hiding sometime and do a reading for you some time.

And so I'm putting this out there here in a comment.. because I know Kevin reads the comments left here.

Please, please, Mr. Eberhardt please come out and share your poetry at Lix and Kix? Pretty please? It is such a fun place to share poetry... very relaxed and friendly we/I would love to hear you actually read your stuff out loud.

    So please say yes... :-)

I appreciate your comments.  When I posted an invitation to this poem on Facebook, a few folks left their comments there.  I'll copy' em here, so KE can see 'em, since he's not on FB.

Maybe I'm getting a tad squeamish in my old age, but this poem made me wanna hurl!

That's strange.. because I liked that poem now that I've re-read it. I wasn't so sure what to think the first time I read it.

But I think I've figured out where he was going with it.. so
