Draconian circumstance (by Kevin Eberhardt)

Poet Kevin Eberhardt
Kevin Eberhardt

Draconian circumstance

In Suburbia nothing much happens
Each day flows into the next like an
Endless water torture drip drip drip
On my head I’ll mow the lawn in
Shocking patterns of incoherence
To break up the monotony or I won’t
Mow it for months at a time just to
Hear the imagined whispers some
Times the wind will blow a roof tile
Off or a bird or a stone will fly into
A window once the basement
Flooded…

                why if a person wears
A cross ‘round his neck he’s a
Christian but if a cross wears a
Person ‘round its neck…

See the same people walking their
Dogs day after day on this merry-
Go-round of the American dream
Lately a lot of houses are up for
Sale & taking their time about it the
Economy being what it is but their
Lawn keeps getting mowed & their
Dogs keep getting walked & I’m
Left with nothing to whisper about

I've been coming across Mr. Eberhardt's poetry all over the internet, and must confess I didn't realize that he was a local Clevelander until recently. I love his poetry, and this poem is a fine example of his dry wit and wry observations. I love the stanza:

    why if a person wears
    A cross ‘round his neck he’s a
Christian but if a cross wears a
    Person ‘round its neck…

Would like to see more of KE's work posted in your Library, JC....

Thanks, Dianne!  That "cross" section wowed me, too.  Kevin's a great poet, and quite prolific.  I look forward to posting more of his work here soon.
